After planning my trip to Switzerland a couple years ago, my dad informed me that my great, great grandfather had been a ferry boat operator on Lake Thun.

SuitcaseEnvy’s Favorite Vegan-Friendly Eateries in the U.S.
Bob’s might be my favorite place to eat in Oregon, my home state. This is a big compliment given the gazillion vegan or vegan-friendly restaurants and food carts in Portland. For the uninitiated, Bob’s Red Mill is a brand of flours and other baking supplies that has a home base of Milwaukie. Just like on the packaging (and in the name of course), Bob’s is an adorable red mill that houses a restaurant and bakery, as well as a store for all your baking needs. Also, Bob is a real guy, and if your timing is right, you may see him eating his morning grits in the dining area or playing a tune on the piano.
How to Plan a Trip Like a (Type A) Boss
My point is that if you’re type A and like to maximize your time in a destination with lots of activities, this blog post is for you. If you’re more go with the flow, take it with a grain of salt and hopefully you’ll still walk away with a few handy tips.
10 Things I Did in Austin Before It Was Cool
I spent two of my favorite years of my life in Austin, Texas. Though writing this post makes me miss it terribly, I’m also quite happy in my current location and I’m assured by my Austin-ite friends that the city isn’t as cool as it used to be. I don’t know if that’s actually true, but I’ll keep telling myself that. Here are a handful of recommendations for anyone visiting this fun-loving and sometimes “weird” city.
What to See (and Skip) in Atlanta
For two years during graduate school, I spent half my time in Atlanta, Georgia and the other half in Auburn, Alabama. I won’t bore you with the circumstances, just that I got to know the city of Atlanta and it was great. I still feel nostalgic when I have a layover at the Atlanta airport, I complain about how I can’t find spices anywhere that are as cheap as at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market, and I wish I could find a popsicle as good as the ones from King of Pops. Then I remember how bad the traffic is and I feel much better.
A Cheapskate’s Guide to Golden Gate Park
It’s surprisingly easy to spend a day at Golden Gate Park and its nearby attractions without spending a dime (well, except gas, tolls, and food- it is the expensive San Francisco Bay Area after all). A handful of activities in the park cost money. Though I’m sure those are great, this post is focused on what you can do for free. Given that Golden Gate Park is even larger than Central Park in New York City, there’s plenty to see.
Five Offbeat Things to Do in the San Francisco Bay Area
In a recent count, I realized that I’ve been to the bay area a whopping 7 times, mostly to visit my amazing sister and brother-in-law. Having seen most of the major tourist attractions already, the mission was to find a handful of unique activities for our quality time. I think we were successful! Here were five of my favorites…
25 Photos That Will Make You Want to Travel the U.S.
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit 29 of the 50 states and am eager to add a few more to my list this summer (Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania here I come!) These are just a handful of my favorite photos from various vacations and road trips – some recognizable destinations, others very random pit stops. Let these serve as inspiration to explore all that the U.S. has to offer…
Montreux & Geneva: Adventures in the French-Speaking Part of Switzerland
Geneva has an airport that’s relatively cheap and easy to fly in and out of. However, it’s also on the Golden Pass panoramic train route. The panoramic trains feel like a destination in and of themselves, offering gigantic windows that extend into the ceiling of the train and stunning views. I highly recommend planning your trip to include this mini-adventure.
What I’ve Learned from Six Trips to Chicago
Since I moved to the Midwest in 2012, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy six trips to Chicago, each time with different loved ones. I’ve been to many of the tourist attractions more than once, and have found some off-the-beaten-path gems along the way. Read on to find out what I’ve learned!
