Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is a sweet little resort town about an hour and 15 minutes from Madison and an hour and 45 minutes from Chicago. Despite its closeness to us, my husband and I had never been there until I learned about Winterfest and decided we needed to go for a low-key babymoon. What did we learn? During my recent trip throughout central and eastern Europe, I had a few people ask me why on earth I had selected Bratislava to spend a couple of my precious travel days. I had a few reasons. First, Bratislava was practically on my route anyway, as it’s only about an hour from the hub of Vienna. I was also drawn to having a break from some of the larger cities and the tour groups that come with them. Third, there’s something special to me about traveling to a place you never anticipated you might go to, and learning as much as you can about that place and its culture.
Innsbruck was not in my original trip itinerary and I’m SO glad I worked it in. It’s truly one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen, with magnificent mountain views everywhere you look. In a matter of minutes, you can take the funicular and cable cars up into the mountains for endless hiking trails. I couldn’t believe that people actually get to live there!
